Course outline

At Level 1 students complete six projects during the three day course and must meet the required standards. This is not a beginner level course; you must have worked with silver clay before attending. Our Beginners Metal Clay one day class or the Camp PMC 101 Course would be sufficient to prepare you for this course although you will need to have practised working with the clay at home after the course to be really ready. If you have attended a beginners or introductory silver metal clay class somewhere else, this may also be sufficient. If you are in doubt, please call us to discuss in more detail.

The projects you will complete are:-

  • Impressions pendant
  • Natural leaf pendant
  • Filigree earrings
  • Syringe decorated ring
  • Brooch with mirror polish
  • Ring with moulded element and pearl

This class will cover:-

  • Using textures

My sister and I did the level 1 diploma with Julia. Well, I think we tried her patience to the MAX! What a wonderful teacher and so generous imparting her knowledge. Very intensive and at times stressful but Julia got us both there in the end with her kind and calm teaching style. Plus endless coffee!
I can’t recommend highly enough. I have the bug now and will be returning to Julia for more instruction.
They say you learn from your mistakes so it’s fair to say I have learnt a LOT!
    Thank you Julia

  2. Justine Smith

My sister and I have just completed our level 1 diploma with Julia. The classes were very well structured and we received lots of useful hints and tips as well as learning to make the 6 items required for the diploma. We felt extremely safe & looked after, the studio was well laid out and fully equipped. Julia has the patience of a SAINT!! We really put her through it, and took everything down to the wire, but did successfully complete everything just in time. This would not have been possible without her help and oversight. She is a magnificent teacher and I would highly recommend her courses. You get very good value for money as you learn LOADS from such an experienced metal clay maker. Thanks Julia and I hope your nerves have recovered. :o)

  3. Gemma

I completed the level 1 diploma in art clay last week with Julia. It was a fantastic 3 days. Full on and intense but amazing at the same time! Julia took us through all the steps we needed to complete each piece and at each stage calmly and methodically. Even when our rings broke for the umpteenth time, Julia just calmly reminded us what we needed to do to repair the piece and why it had broken in the first place. I learnt so much!
I would thoroughly recommend, if you’re thinking of undertaking the art clay diploma course, to learn under Julia Rai.

  4. Louise

I have just completed the Art Clay Level 1 Diploma with Julia Rai at the CSACJ. In this 3-day course you use fine silver clay to make 2 rings, two pendants, a pair of earrings and a brooch. There is good tuition and mentoring as you go and Julia is informative and patient. However, this is not for the complete beginner because It is fast moving and requires a reasonable knowledge of the use of metal clay before you go. Highly recommended.

  5. Becky

One of the most enjoyable courses I have been on. I attended the level 1 silver clay diploma course with Julia. I have learnt a huge amount through both this course and the wonderful beginners session and taster I completed before with Julia and I’m really looking forward to trying my new skills out at home. I would highly recommend anyone interested in working with silver clay to go on a course here.

  6. Eleanor

Julia is very welcoming and instantly puts everyone at ease. Easily approached if questions needed answering. Calm atmosphere, well laid out studio space. The best part was learning new techniques but developing them to an expected standard. Thank you so much.

  7. Fiona

A lovely welcoming atmosphere – I thought it might feel more stressful working with other people’s ‘stuff’ but was easy going and professional at the same time. Julia is really friendly, really helpful and positive. Knew exactly how to problem solve at every point. Just the right challenge with great help along the way and really nice people.

  8. Jutta

Fantastic class! Julia is an excellent teacher and it was a great experience to take the certificate class while getting great advice.

  9. Jude

Julia is very patient and encouraging. The best part was learning new skills in a supportive environment.

  10. Jayne

Fantastic class, learnt a lot and can’t wait to go and use some new techniques.
