Course outline

At Art Clay Diploma Level 1 students complete six projects during the three day course and must meet the required standards. This is not a beginner level course; you must have worked with silver clay before attending. Our Beginners Metal Clay one day class  would be sufficient to prepare you for this course although you will need to have practised working with the clay at home after the course to be really ready. If you have attended a beginners or introductory silver metal clay class somewhere else, this may also be sufficient. If you are in doubt, please call us to discuss in more detail.

The projects you will complete are:-

  • Impressions pendant
  • Natural leaf pendant
  • Filigree earrings
  • Syringe decorated ring
  • Brooch with mirror polish
  • Ring with moulded element and pearl

This class will cover:-

  • Using textures
  • Setting embeddable, fire-in-place stones and findings
  • Painting a leaf with Art Clay paste
  • Creating a filigree effect using Art Clay syringe clay
  • Using cork clay to support hollow forms
  • Ring making including calculating ring shrinkage
  • Using syringe and paste for decoration
  • Polishing and finishing to a high standard including mirror polishing
  • Using two part moulding compound
  • Embedding fine silver wire to attach pearl after firing

What is included in the cost of this class?

The class cost includes all materials and the Art Clay World Level 1 Diploma fee.

  3. Tracey Evonne Wade

I recently completed my art clay level 1 diploma with Julia. She is an amazing, highly skilled teacher with a lovely, friendly personality. I chose to do this on a one to one basis which is a great option to have if you can’t make timetabled sessions. Julia provides a really comfortable, organised working environment so you have everything to hand that you need to complete your projects. The three days were well structured to maximise the use of working time and she gave me regular updates on my progress. I had quite a few ‘oops’ moments but Julia was really encouraging and patient. I have learned much more than I anticipated and enjoyed every minute of it – I had a hoot! I’d highly recommend her if you are looking to undertake the art clay diplomas. Thank you so much Julia x

I had an excellent three day one to one course with Julia. Her knowledge of metal clays and fine silver metal clay is wonderful. She shows you how to do a project and then the rest is up to you. Julia’s enthusiasm for this medium is contagious and I’m just brimming with ideas for my next project.

It was nice to be in a spacious light studio, everything you needed was at your fingertips. This was a private 121 tutored course and would definatley recommend it to those budding metal clay artist who have some experience in working with the material, as it is an intense 3 days.
