Description

Dockyard micro carving tools are designed for wood carving. However, they are fantastic for carving into dry metal clay, baked polymer clay, erasers and lino. They are highly recommended by metal clay artists all over the world. We also use them here at the school in a number of classes.

About the Dockyard Micro Carving Tools

The Dockyard micro carving tools all have the same cherry wood handle which is about four inches long and is a hexagon design. The overall length of the tools is about 5.5 inches. These tools are great for detail work. They also work well for all kinds of carving because of the small size and varied tool shapes. We stock U shaped gouges in a range of sizes from 1.5mm to 5mm, V tools from 1.5mm to 3mm and two sizes of plough which is a small chisel shaped tool in 1.5mm and 2mm widths. You can buy a Dockyard stropping kit to keep your tools sharp using this link.

Safely Using the Tools

All tools are posted with a short piece of urethane tubing over the cutting end to protect the tool while shipping and until you decide how you will store them. The tools are very sharp when they leave the factory so take care when you use them. Always carve away from your hands and fingers and store out of the reach of children. The Dockyard micro carving tools are made in the USA.

Learn How to Carve

Dockyard carving tools are great for creating your own unique textures to use with metal clay or polymer clay. Carved textures tend to be deeper than other self made texture plates. This means they are especially good for enamelling or adding other types of colour to your finished jewellery.

Julia teaches carving unique textures as part of the texture making class available at CSACJ. If you are particularly interested in learning how to carve, contact Julia to organise a private day with her focusing on carving. This will cover carving dry metal clay, baked polymer clay, silicone blocks and even erasers.
