Class Outline

This class is suitable for people new to the fantastic medium of precious metal clay.  It is particularly useful for anyone who already makes their own jewellery, although complete beginners also really enjoy this class. You will make beads to complement your other bead work or as focal pieces in their own right. No previous experience of metal clay or jewellery making is needed so this class is great for beginners. You’ll be guided through every step by Julia Rai who is an experienced metal clay tutor. We guarantee you’ll come out with some great beads.

First of all, we will begin this one day silver clay workshop with two simple bead types, the flat bead and the rolled bead. The emphasis will be on building confidence working with metal clay and focusing on fun.

After this, you’ll then progress to making a hollow lentil bead followed by a more complex hollow form tube bead. You’ll also set a gemstone into one of these beads. You’ll learn the importance of refining your piece before firing it. Before you use a butane torch to fire your creations you will be given a complete safety briefing. Finally, you’ll see the magical transformation when you polish your hand made pieces of jewellery.

What skills will you learn?

During the day, you’ll learn the following skills:-

  • Rolling out and texturing the silver clay
  • Cutting the precious metal clay and forming it to create holes and dimension
  • Pasting pieces of metal clay together
  • Dry construction of hollow forms
  • Stone setting a fire-in-place cubic zirconia
  • Drying and refining your work
  • Firing the pieces using a butane torch
  • Polishing and finishing your jewellery
  • Patina using Liver of Sulphur

Julia will help you to create beautiful fine silver clay beads using your own jewellery design ideas. You will have a wide variety of textures to choose from to decorate your precious metal clay beads. There is no pressure and Julia will work with you to ensure you achieve your jewellery making goals for the day. You’ll finish the metal clay class with enough knowledge and most importantly, confidence with precious metal clay to create unique beads at home!

How much precious metal clay is included in the price?

The course cost includes enough precious metal clay to create the four basic bead types and a choice of cubic zirconia stone to embed. If necessary, you can buy additional precious metal clay or stones, maybe to take home and continue working with metal clay. We also have some basic tools that you can buy from our onsite shop but everything you need to make the beads will be provided while you are taking the class. Or you can bring your own  metal clay if you’d prefer (PMC3 or Art Clay Silver). We have Sterling silver chains and ear wires to buy from our shop. Or if you have your own chain or ear wires bring them along and Julia will help you hang them. This will mean you can go home wearing your new jewellery.
